New EU Regulations on Marine Firefighting Suits Effective in 2025

The EU has upgraded standards for marine firefighting suits, with mandatory enforcement from June 2025. In 2024, the EU issued Directive (EU) 2024/1975, requiring that new firefighting suits used on vessels within EU jurisdiction comply with the EN 469:2020 Level 2 protection standard from June 2025. The regulation applies to equipment used on commercial ships, passenger vessels, and other maritime operations.

Compared with previous requirements, the new standard introduces several key upgrades. The thermal protection level is raised to X2 to better resist radiant heat. The waterproof level reaches Y2, with additional tests such as steam penetration to ensure performance in high-humidity and high-pressure environments. Breathability is improved to Z2, reducing heat stress while maintaining safety and comfort.

In response to the new regulation, shipowners and PPE manufacturers need to act quickly. Newly purchased firefighting suits must comply with the X2/Y2/Z2 requirements. Vessel safety management documents should be updated accordingly, and compliance certificates such as CE certification and marine equipment approval should be submitted to classification societies. Procurement plans may also need adjustment to avoid customs clearance or inspection risks caused by non-compliant products. The new standard is a key requirement for entering the EU market, and stakeholders should prepare in advance to ensure smooth operations.
